Orlando Bloom's Threesome Scene with Mara Sisters Sparks Controversy

A controversial threesome scene in Werner Herzog's latest film, 'Bucking Fastard,' has ignited debate online, with viewers describing the depiction of Orlando Bloom and real-life sisters Rooney and Kate Mara sharing an intimate encounter as "weird" and "unethical."

The film, which is loosely based on the true story of British twins Freda and Greta Chaplin, features Bloom as the shared love interest of the identical twins, portrayed by Rooney and Kate Mara.

Social media reactions ranged from expressions of disgust to confusion. "This is just weird," one user commented on Reddit, while another questioned on X, "Why would they agree to this?" The sentiment was echoed by others who deemed the scene "appalling" and "disgusting."

Bloom, 49, discussed shooting the scene at the San Sebastián Film Festival, describing it as "sincere" and noting a "simplicity to the characters and [their] carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters." He added that his character, "the Bucking Fastard," is "sensitive too. And he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways."

Director Werner Herzog commented on the scene, stating that he gave Bloom freedom, telling him, "You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms. How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions." Herzog praised the moment as "beautiful because it has such charm and depth."

The Mara sisters, Rooney, 41, and Kate, 43, are acting together for the first time in the film. They play the fictionalized Chaplin twins, Jean and Joan Holbrooke, who were known for their inseparable bond, often speaking in unison, wearing matching clothes, and sharing the same man.

Rooney Mara described the experience of playing an identical twin alongside her sister as "daunting" but ultimately rewarding. "We found pretty quickly that having had a lifetime together and all the history and a childhood of playing together there was a world between us, we didn't have to work very hard to create it at all," she said. She added that the experience was "once in a lifetime" and that she "never laughed so much."

Kate Mara echoed her sister's sentiments, noting that playing the co-dependent twins came naturally. "Once we figured out the rhythm of speaking in unison it felt like a song, it was very musical," she explained. She shared that Herzog had sent them a "beautiful letter" asking them to be in the film, which immediately felt like a "no-brainer" due to the unique premise.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Freda Chaplin died at 77 in May, 13 years after her twin Greta died of ovarian cancer at 64. They are buried together in Fulford Cemetery, York.

Bloom has two children: Flynn, 15, with ex-wife Miranda Kerr, and Daisy, six, with ex-fiancée Katy Perry. He is reportedly dating model Luisa Laemmel.
