The latest John Lewis Christmas advertisement has drawn sharp criticism from Daily Mail columnist Sarah Vine, who described it as "woke, nonsensical and frankly insulting drivel." Vine suggested that the only plausible explanation for the ad's content is that the retailer's creative team has been replaced by artificial intelligence.
"The John Lewis Christmas ad is laced with so much entitlement, idiocy and general wokery it's almost impossible to watch," Vine wrote. She questioned the ad's premise, the portrayal of its characters, and the musical accompaniment.
Vine specifically took issue with the ad's narrative, which she characterized as depicting "spoilt, entitled, rude and overindulged children" and "useless, spineless, pathetic parents." She also criticized the musical arrangement of a Rolling Stones song used in the advertisement, deeming it a "terrible mauling."
