With a Major League Baseball lockout imminent, the race to sign top free agent pitcher Tarik Skubal is intensifying, potentially leading to a significant bidding war. ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reported that the Chicago Cubs "badly want Skubal" to lead their rotation, though they express skepticism about their willingness to meet his expected contract demands, which could exceed $300 million and potentially reach $400 million.

Passan also identified the San Diego Padres as another suitor. The Padres' rotation has seen significant shifts after Michael King opted out of his contract and Nick Pivetta was released following an injury-plagued season. "The San Diego Padres need a rotation anchor, and arguably the best pitcher in baseball would more than suffice," Passan noted.

However, Passan believes the ultimate competition for Skubal's services will likely come down to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets. While Skubal reportedly "would love to return to the Dodgers" due to the team's culture and resources, his decision is expected to hinge on finances. Alden Gonzalez of ESPN suggested that the outcome will depend on whether the Dodgers are willing to match offers from the Mets or other potential bidders, especially with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding a salary cap.

The MLB lockout is set to begin less than a month from now, adding urgency for teams looking to secure major free-agent talent like Skubal before the shutdown.
