Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has been admitted to intensive care after collapsing during a Spanish second division match against Andorra on Monday. The 30-year-old is in stable condition, according to a club statement, following a collision with goalkeeper Jesus Owono that led to the fixture being abandoned deep into stoppage time with the score tied 2-2.
CD Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel is admitted to the ICU at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, stable despite the severity of his condition," the club statement read. "The medical services at said hospital will be present and will report when there are updates."
Spanish media outlet Marca reported that De Miguel is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported to the hospital and had to be revived in the ambulance. He remains unconscious, according to reports.
The incident occurred in the seventh minute of stoppage time as De Miguel was poised to break away on a counter-attack. He appeared to be struck in the chest by Owono's knee as the goalkeeper attempted to clear a long ball near the halfway line. After initially staying down, De Miguel became motionless, prompting medical staff to rush onto the pitch.
Medical personnel attended to De Miguel for over five minutes, during which time his teammates appeared visibly distressed, with some in tears. Owono was initially shown a red card for the challenge before the referee made the decision to abandon the match.
Andorra released a statement expressing their support: "We want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesus de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today's match. We hope he recovers soon. A very strong hug to the player, his family and Tenerife."
