Nigella Lawson Admits Baking Nerves Ahead of Bake Off Judging Debut

Nigella Lawson, known for her culinary expertise, has revealed she feels 'no polished' baker and harbors concerns about judging amateur contestants on the upcoming season of The Great British Bake Off.

Lawson will join fellow judge Paul Hollywood to evaluate 12 amateur bakers, a role she described as a "huge leap." The 66-year-old told the Radio Times that her own baking journey began later in life, and she learned through practice, making her more sympathetic to the contestants' home-baking backgrounds.

"Generally speaking, I don't think of myself as a judge," Lawson stated. "I came to baking later in life and because of that it's something that intrigues and fascinates me. I've learnt by doing and I'm a home baker, not a professional. It's quite interesting because the contestants are home bakers, too, so I have sympathy for that."

While Lawson has previous judging experience, it was in scrutinizing professional chefs on MasterChef Australia. Her presence marks a significant change for The Great British Bake Off, where she follows in the footsteps of experienced judges like Dame Mary Berry and Dame Prue Leith.

Paul Hollywood acknowledged the distinct qualities each judge brings to the show. "Mary was different to Prue, Prue was different to Nigella and Nigella is different to Mary," he said. "They each bring their own character to it, and Nigella is a very warm person, especially to the bakers. More so than Mary was and I think more akin to Prue. There's a very nurturing nature to Nigella, which was quite strong this year. Whereas me, I suppose I'm the constant. So I remain in my position of being constructively critical."

This season also introduces new elements to the competition, including "wearable" bakes, a free-from week, and a signature challenge where contestants bake with a chosen relative. Hollywood, a self-proclaimed traditionalist, expressed reservations about format changes but praised the audience-selected "bake with a relative" challenge as a "fantastic idea."

The Great British Bake Off returns to Channel 4 tonight at 8 p.m.
