Joe Lycett Ready to Challenge Typecasting in 'Celebrity Traitors'

Joe Lycett, known for his energetic and often prank-filled public appearances, is preparing to step into a new role on the upcoming season of Celebrity Traitors. The comedian expressed his excitement to reveal a less performative side of himself, moving beyond the label of the “gay comedian off the telly.”

Lycett, who became a father in 2024, stated that he has been focusing on his physical fitness with the goal of being a “better dad.” He anticipates that his more relaxed demeanor off-stage might surprise his fellow contestants, who may primarily associate him with his on-stage persona.

"When I started doing stand-up, my on and off-stage persona were quite similar. I showed off at parties because I wanted attention and then, gradually, as I got that attention through doing stand-up, I could calm down in real life," Lycett told the BBC. "When I’m not out on stage, I’m very calm, thoughtful and peaceful. I think the comics know what I'm like on and off stage, but I think the others who, for the first time, will spend time with me not in ‘show mode’ might see that as suspicious."

Lycett, who has described himself as pansexual, acknowledged that his public image sometimes leads to assumptions about his sexuality. He clarified that he has a female partner and a son with her, emphasizing his tranquil nature when not in a performance setting.

The comedian also hinted at bringing some of his signature flamboyant fashion choices to the castle, though he suggested some outfits might be reserved for everyday wear if the opportunity arises. He also revealed his deep admiration for The Traitors, admitting he once contacted the production company to request behind-the-scenes footage.

Lycett joins a cast that includes a notable number of comedians, a factor fellow contestant James Acaster suggested could lead to increased suspicion among the group. Acaster noted that a comedian won the previous season, potentially casting a shadow over this year's comedic participants.

“There will be suspicions that it’s going to be at least one of these guys, that we might form an alliance if we’re not broken apart,” Acaster said. “I think we're going to be the first ones under the magnifying glass being looked at.”

The new series of Celebrity Traitors is scheduled to premiere on October 1st at 8 p.m. on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, featuring a lineup of celebrities playing for a cash prize for their chosen charities.
