An assailant attacked and killed a security officer near the Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman, Jordan, on Thursday, authorities said.

Jordan's Public Security Directorate stated that a member of its forces was assaulted with a sharp object and died. An investigation into the attack has been launched. The Sri Lankan Embassy confirmed the incident took place in its vicinity.

According to Jordan's state-run Al-Mamlaka TV, the arrested assailant attempted to seize the slain security officer's weapon. A second security officer intervened, resulting in injuries to both the assailant and the second officer.

The attack follows a deadly shooting at a church in southern Jordan weeks earlier, which killed nine people and wounded dozens more.
