Prince William and Prince Harry are continuing to honor their late mother, Princess Diana, through separate tributes. Both princes penned congratulatory letters to the latest recipients of The Diana Award, a charity founded in their mother's memory. This gesture highlights their shared commitment to Diana's legacy, even as it underscores their ongoing rift.
The Diana Award, which is the only charity bearing Princess Diana's name and supported by both brothers, recognized 198 young people from 44 countries. The honorees were selected for their dedication to social action and their efforts to create positive change in their communities and globally. According to the organization, this year included 23 recipients from the United States.
While the brothers' participation in honoring Diana represents a rare instance of alignment, it does not signal a mending of their strained relationship. Their estrangement has been evident in public appearances since Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals in 2020. Despite a reported move back to the UK by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in August, Harry and William have not publicly reconciled.
Prince Harry has expressed a desire to heal the rift, stating in a recent interview that he wants their relationship to work out. He acknowledged that external factors may hinder reconciliation and described their fractured bond as relatable to many people's experiences with family conflicts. However, he also noted the difficulty in letting go of past issues that continue to affect him daily.
The brothers previously reunited in July 2021 to unveil a statue of Princess Diana at Kensington Palace on what would have been her 60th birthday. However, they have maintained a noticeable distance at subsequent family events, including Queen Elizabeth II's funeral and a memorial service for their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes.
