Yasin Mohamed, a participant on the German reality show "Love Island VIP," has been convicted of raping a fellow contestant, Sophie Imelmann, while filming the show's finale in Greece in July 2024. Mohamed, 35, was sentenced by the Munich District Court to a suspended prison sentence of one year and eight months, ordered to complete 200 hours of community service, and placed on a three-year probation period.

The incident occurred after the couple argued and retreated to separate rooms. Imelmann, an actress and influencer, later went to Mohamed's room to reconcile, where they engaged in consensual kissing and physical contact. However, Imelmann told the court that she had repeatedly communicated her unwillingness to engage in sexual intercourse due to fears of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Despite her explicit refusal, Mohamed allegedly penetrated her twice without a condom.

Judge Regina Partin stated that the court was convinced Mohamed had heard and understood Imelmann's refusal but proceeded regardless. She emphasized that a "rape is a rape" and that consensual intimate contact did not equate to consent for intercourse. The court described the case as an "unusual rape case" with "very ambivalent behavior" within a developing relationship, but reiterated that this did not negate the importance of Imelmann's refusal.

Prosecutors had sought a longer sentence of two years and eight months. Mohamed's defense argued that he believed the encounter was consensual and did not realize he had crossed boundaries, with his lawyer suggesting Imelmann had staged a "media performance." The defense also interpreted a secretly recorded conversation differently from the prosecution, which called one of Mohamed's statements a confession. Mohamed denied the allegations and his defense team has announced an appeal, meaning the verdict is not yet legally binding.

Imelmann, who publicly raised allegations against Mohamed on social media in December 2024, expressed relief after the verdict, stating, "I am incredibly relieved and at the end of my strength." Mohamed, a former professional basketball player, first met Imelmann on the German RTL2 dating show.
