Four foreign tourists and their guide were forced to jump into the water after their snorkeling boat exploded and caught fire near Bali, Indonesia. The incident occurred on Thursday in the waters of Gamat Bay off Nusa Penida during a snorkeling excursion that had planned stops at Manta Bay, Crystal Bay, and Gamat Bay.
According to a statement from the Klungkung Regency Police, a loud explosion was heard from the rear of the boat about an hour into the trip as it was preparing to leave Gamat Bay. Police believe the explosion originated from a battery component attached to the boat. The resulting flames prompted the guide and the four foreign guests to jump into the sea for safety.
A passing boat rescued the passengers and crew members around 2:50 p.m. All individuals were safely evacuated, though the boat captain sustained serious burns to his legs and was taken to Gema Santhi Regional Hospital for treatment.
The boat, named Naomi, had reportedly undergone routine repairs and maintenance prior to the incident. The exact cause of the explosion and fire remains under investigation. The boat owner is expected to file an official report with the Nusa Penida Police.
Nusa Penida, located approximately 15 miles southeast of Bali, is a popular tourist destination known for its clear waters, coastal cliffs, and snorkeling spots. Bali welcomed nearly 7 million foreign tourists in 2025, according to Indonesia's official statistics agency.
