President Trump announced on Thursday that he intends to keep Pete Hegseth as Secretary of War, pushing back against growing pressure to remove him from the position. This stance comes after recent midterm election results that saw significant Democratic victories.
"I have every intention to keep him," Trump told ABC News anchor Jonathan Karl. "I get these calls, you know, about him. I don’t understand why."
Hegseth has faced considerable criticism regarding his advocacy for the war in Iran. Some administration figures, including Vice President JD Vance, have attributed the Democratic gains in the House and Senate races to Hegseth's handling of the conflict.
Some Republicans have suggested that Trump should replace Hegseth while the party still holds a Senate majority. Retiring Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina was among those who have reportedly urged such a move.
Additionally, the House of Representatives is considering a resolution to impeach Hegseth. This vote could occur during the upcoming lame-duck session. Democrats have indicated that they intend to pursue action against Hegseth if he remains in his post when the new Congress convenes in January.
