Political data analyst Nate Silver has speculated that Donald Trump might not complete a potential second term, citing a "weird intuition." Silver discussed the possibility on his "Still Counting" podcast, pondering who might succeed Trump as the Republican presidential nominee in 2028.
Silver described the Republican Party's complete endorsement of Trump as a "deal with the devil." He explained that while the party has secured certain policy victories, such as Supreme Court appointments and tax cuts for the wealthy, it has paid a significant price by allowing Trump to "suck out the oxygen from anybody else" within the party. He noted that current Vice President JD Vance leading Republican polls is "kind of crazy," observing that it was once more common for presidents and vice presidents to be rivals.
This dynamic contributed to Silver's hunch that Trump might "find some pretense to quit." He also warned that an increasingly isolated Trump could become "dangerous," predicting that the former president may soon have "no fucking leverage" domestically and has "lost the fear factor."
Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has also previously speculated that Trump might not finish a second term, even predicting before the 2026 midterms that he could leave office by Easter 2027, following anticipated heavy Republican losses.
