Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham shared a post on social media Wednesday that stressed the importance of personal excellence in the wake of the midterm elections. The post, originally from entrepreneur Andy Frisella and reshared to Cunningham's Instagram Stories, suggests that focusing on individual self-improvement is more impactful than relying on political changes.
The message argued that a society's strength is a reflection of its citizens' character, discipline, and standards. "Politics is downstream of culture," the post stated, implying that fundamental societal issues won't change unless the culture itself does. It further posited that a populace characterized by weakness and dependence is easier to control than one that is strong, healthy, educated, and self-reliant. The author encouraged individuals to strive for the opposite of what society might expect, framing this pursuit of "personal excellence" as the "Ultimate Rebellion."
Cunningham, a free agent for the Indiana Fever, had previously navigated public discussion regarding her views on political matters and athlete participation in sports. Earlier in the year, she clarified her stance on transgender athletes in women's sports, stating her desire to protect young girls in sports while also expressing that she is "very much in the middle" on political issues and agrees and disagrees with aspects of various viewpoints.
This latest social media activity occurred as Democrats secured control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections.
