New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that the frequency of communication between him and President Donald Trump varies, with neither leader being overly concerned about who initiates contact. Mamdani, who identifies as a socialist, and Trump, a Republican, have maintained a working relationship despite their differing political ideologies.
Mamdani told Fox News’ Shannon Bream that the focus of their conversations is always on what is best for New York City. "It varies," Mamdani said regarding who makes the first call or text. "And I think that speaks to the fact that nobody’s very precious about who’s calling or who’s texting. It’s just, what’s the conversation about? If it’s New York City, I’m there."
The unlikely rapport between the two leaders began with a meeting at the White House in November of the previous year. This initial encounter occurred despite Mamdani having previously criticized Trump, and Trump having labeled Mamdani a "communist."
Since then, they have met again, including a private meeting in the Oval Office in February. Their communication has included text messages and phone calls. In September, they convened at Gracie Mansion to discuss immigration and a significant housing project in Queens, known as Sunnyside Yard, for which Mamdani is seeking federal support. Mamdani, a former state legislator from Queens, has sought to find common ground with Trump, who also hails from Queens, by highlighting Trump's background in construction and requesting $21 billion for the affordable housing development.
