A Georgia man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for concealing his mother's death after he initially told emergency services she had been abducted by aliens. Jason Christopher Campbell, 35, was convicted of hiding the death of his mother, Marie Campbell, 65, at their home in Homer, Georgia.

Marie Campbell was reported missing on Jan. 6, with her car, purse, identification, and phone left behind. Her son initially told investigators on Jan. 8 that an unknown person had picked her up days earlier and that he had not heard from her since she vanished. However, police were alerted to a prior 911 call made by Campbell himself, in which he claimed his mother had been “abducted by aliens,” according to Now Georgia.

Investigators searched the family’s property and discovered Marie Campbell’s charred remains in the backyard near a fire pit with a still-smoldering mattress. A vehicle with a seat that appeared to have been removed or folded down, covered by a mud-splattered sheet, was also found.

Campbell was charged in February 2025 with concealing his mother’s death. An autopsy confirmed the remains were hers, though officials have not disclosed the cause of death, nor has Campbell been accused of causing it. Prosecutors successfully argued during a five-day trial that Campbell had concealed the death, which is a felony in Georgia if it hinders the determination of whether the death was unlawful. Judge Albert Collier imposed the maximum sentence of 10 years after Campbell was found guilty.
