Democrat James Talarico has made history in Texas, securing a Senate seat and marking the first time in nearly 40 years a Democrat has won such a race in the state. Talarico's victory came against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a strong ally of former President Donald Trump, whose endorsement ultimately backfired.
The Fox News Decision Desk called the race for Talarico on Tuesday night, concluding a hard-fought campaign. Trump had heavily backed Paxton, with his MAGA Inc. political action committee and national Republicans reportedly pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into the effort to support Paxton's campaign.
Talarico, a state representative, styled himself as a moderate candidate focused on representing Texans rather than national party interests. He campaigned on Paxton's record, particularly amid allegations of corruption that led to Paxton's impeachment by the Texas House, though he was later acquitted by the Texas Senate.
Paxton and other Republicans attempted to paint Talarico as a radical, highlighting his past remarks on social issues and his support for the transgender community. Trump himself dubbed Talarico "Talafreako," calling him one of the worst candidates he had ever seen.
Despite the significant financial backing and Trump's endorsement, Talarico's insurgent campaign proved successful. The race also exposed a rift within the Republican party, as incumbent Senator John Cornyn, whom Paxton defeated in the primary, declined to campaign for Paxton, stating his decision was based on Paxton's "flawed, self-centered and shameless candidate" status.
The outcome in Texas adds to a challenging midterm election night for Republicans, with projections indicating Democrats were set to regain control of the House majority. The Fox News Decision Desk also projected Governor Greg Abbott losing to his Democratic challenger, Gina Hinojosa, around the same time.
