Representative Robert Garcia, a Democrat from California, has pledged to pursue aggressive investigations into the Trump family and White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, whom he described as “the architect of horror.” Garcia, who is set to become the next chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, articulated his intentions in a recent interview on CNN.
Garcia characterized the Trump family as “the most corrupt family to ever be in the Oval Office” and called Donald Trump “the most corrupt person to ever be president of the United States.” He cited specific financial dealings, including hundreds of thousands of dollars reportedly received by Donald Trump Jr. from a Russian oligarch for his wedding and $2 billion from Saudi Arabia for Jared Kushner after leaving the White House. Garcia alleged a pattern of “grift” that benefits the Trumps while the American public struggles with costs for basic necessities like gas and groceries.
Stephen Miller, recently appointed as chief of staff, also drew sharp criticism from Garcia. The congressman accused Miller of being responsible for “horrific, unjust policy happening across the country,” particularly regarding immigration. Garcia specifically referenced Miller's controversial remarks about Alex Pretti, an American citizen shot by immigration agents, whom Miller had labeled a “would-be assassin” and “domestic terrorist.” Garcia condemned Miller's role in immigration policies that lead to family separations and profit private companies through detentions.
Garcia's strong stance was amplified by a tweet on election night stating, “LAWYER UP,” signaling his intent to investigate the Trump administration. He further elaborated that “When Republicans go low, what we’re not gonna do anymore is just take the high road and turn the other cheek. We’re gonna get down and be in that fight.”
These declarations have prompted reactions from conservative figures. Former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized Garcia's approach as political retribution, while Attorney General Todd Blanche, responding to Garcia’s call for Miller to “lawyer up,” stated that the Chief of Staff already has legal counsel. Garcia also engaged with Blanche on social media, questioning his department's handling of the Epstein files.
Garcia has also indicated an interest in investigating a "White House coverup" related to the Epstein files. His broad agenda includes taking on powerful corporations and challenging strict immigration enforcement practices.
