Democrat Annie Andrews is projected to have won a South Carolina Senate race, marking the first statewide Democratic victory in the state in nearly three decades, according to the BBC's U.S. partner CBS. Andrews, a former pediatrician, was on course to pull off a surprise upset in Tuesday's midterm elections.
The seat was held by Republican Darline Graham, who was appointed in July to fill the vacancy left by the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. President Trump had endorsed Graham for the position.
During her primary campaign, Graham acknowledged her limited political experience, noting in one instance that she was "not that informed on national security." When asked about the U.S. stance on Taiwan during a debate, she stated, "National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I do support the military." Lindsey Graham, her brother, had served in the Senate since 2002 and was a prominent voice on foreign policy. Trump won South Carolina by 18 points in the 2024 presidential election.
