A historic women's volleyball match between Nebraska and Missouri at Wrigley Field was suspended on Sunday after weather conditions made the court unsafe for play. The fixture, part of the Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge and televised on Fox, experienced two delays before officials decided to halt the competition. Despite temperatures in the 70s, high humidity in Chicago created significant moisture on the TeraFlex floor, causing it to become excessively slippery.
The first set was stopped after only three points for more than 15 minutes as players from both teams used towels to dry the court. They also removed logos from the playing surface in an attempt to mitigate the hazardous conditions. Battery-powered blowers were brought out by staff, but the moisture continued to affect play. The match was paused again with Nebraska leading 11-7 in the first set before a suspension was officially announced.
"Due to weather conditions affecting the court surface, Sunday's volleyball match between Nebraska and Missouri has been suspended," a Big Ten statement read. "Despite best efforts and in collaboration with all parties, rescheduling at Wrigley Field is not possible."
Nebraska coach Dani Busboom Kelly stated, "You don't want to see any injury and put any athlete at a risk for injury. So I think we just kept looking at each other every time somebody would slip and it's like, 'This probably is not going to work.'" She added that her players were concerned about the risk of injury when jumping on the temporary court, which was constructed over the baseball field.
An impromptu dance battle between the teams provided entertainment for the sold-out crowd of 43,067 attendees during one of the breaks. However, players expressed relief that the decision was made to suspend the match, prioritizing athlete safety.
The decision on whether the match can be made up at a later date or a different location will be announced by the schools. This event marked the first volleyball match ever held at Wrigley Field, the iconic home of the Chicago Cubs.
