UEFA has initiated a disciplinary investigation into Fenerbahce players Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi following incidents that occurred during and after the team's Champions League qualifier against Lyon last month. Fenerbahce confirmed the investigation in a statement on Thursday, indicating that the club itself is also subject to the process.

The controversy stems from the second leg of the qualifier, which Fenerbahce won 2-1 to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory and advance to the League Phase. At the conclusion of the match, Guendouzi became involved in heated exchanges with Lyon supporters and was reportedly attacked by a member of the French club's coaching staff.

Footage from the stands appeared to show Lyon's goalkeeping coach, Antonio Ferreira, emerging from the tunnel and confronting Guendouzi, leading to a melee involving players and staff from both sides. Reports suggest punches were thrown and security personnel intervened.

Greenwood was also reportedly involved in the altercations. Both players are alleged to have made gestures towards the home fans. Guendouzi was heard shouting "Allez l'OM," a reference to his former club Marseille, while Greenwood allegedly grabbed his crotch and made a facial expression toward the supporters. The pair later posed together in the dressing room making hand gestures.

Guendouzi had been a focal point of contention during the match itself, with reports of him giving middle fingers to fans and shouting provocatively at opponents. Following the game, Lyon's Corentin Tolisso commented on the need for humility in victory, suggesting Guendouzi's actions were unnecessary.

Guendouzi has since defended his behavior, stating that Lyon fans had insulted his family. Fenerbahce manager Ismail Kartal has offered his support to the midfielder.

The club stated that it will present its defenses to UEFA to protect the interests of its players and Fenerbahce. The club is submitting all necessary information and documents to UEFA and is closely monitoring developments. Fenerbahce is scheduled to begin its European campaign at home against Roma next Thursday, with the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings pending.
