San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Trent Williams has declared that quarterback Brock Purdy embodies the team's "heart and soul," asserting that Purdy has earned the respect of his teammates.
"You look at the definition of leader and Brock Purdy’s picture is probably there," Williams told reporters on Monday. "He’s a treat to watch. I’m excited for Aussie fans to get their first glimpse of him. He’s the heart and soul of the team."
Williams' sentiment might come as a surprise to some, given Purdy's relatively quiet demeanor. Many might initially consider a more outwardly energetic player like tight end George Kittle as the team's emotional core. However, leadership can manifest in various ways, and Purdy's influence is felt regardless of his vocal presence.
Purdy, Williams, and Kittle are among the eight captains for the 49ers this season. The full list of captains includes Nick Bosa, Kyle Juszczyk, Deommodore Lenoir, Christian McCaffrey, and Fred Warner. While all hold leadership positions, it is Purdy who commands the huddle when the 49ers' offense takes the field, not only by virtue of being the quarterback but also as the team's recognized leader.
