Sandy Alderson, Brian Sabean, and Lou Piniella are among the eight candidates on the non-player ballot for the 2027 National Baseball Hall of Fame election, the Hall of Fame announced Monday.
The Contemporary Baseball Era Committee will meet on December 6 in San Diego to vote on the group, which requires 75 percent of the vote from the 16-person panel to earn induction.
Alderson, who served as the Mets' General Manager from 2011–2018 and President from 2021–2023, is also recognized for his work with the Oakland Athletics, where he was GM during a period that included a World Series appearance and three pennants. He also held roles with the San Diego Padres and in the commissioner's office.
During his tenure with the Mets, Alderson was instrumental in player acquisition and development, notably overseeing the mid-2010s rotation that reached the World Series in 2015. He returned to lead the organization under new ownership in the early 2020s.
Sabean, who had stints with the Yankees as a scout and director from 1985-1992 and as an executive senior advisor from 2023-26, is more widely known for his successful run as General Manager of the San Francisco Giants, where he won three World Series titles in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Prior to his time in San Francisco, Sabean was credited with helping the Yankees identify and draft key players such as Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera.
Piniella, a fan favorite as a player for the Yankees and a two-time World Series champion in 1977 and 1978, also managed the team from 1986–1987 and in 1988. He was briefly the Yankees' general manager in 1988 before returning to manage. Piniella went on to manage for 23 major league seasons, including a World Series win with the Cincinnati Reds in 1990, and retired with a career record of 1,835–1,713.
Other candidates on the ballot include World Series-winning managers Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy, along with Joe Maddon, Ted Turner, and Bill White. These candidates are being considered by this committee because their primary contributions to the game have occurred since 1980.
