Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic confronted a fan who threw a basketball at a referee during Wednesday night's game against the Sacramento Kings. The incident occurred late in the third quarter of the Lakers' 116-103 victory.
During a play along the baseline, a spectator in the front row caught the ball and threw it back onto the court towards rookie NBA official Chelisa Painter. While Painter did not appear to react, Doncic was observed confronting the fan.
"He just tossed – really strong – the ball towards the ref," Doncic was later quoted as saying, according to courtside microphones. "I was just asking him what the hell is he doing?"
The fan was subsequently escorted out of the arena by security. Broadcast commentators noted the unusual nature of the confrontation and the fan's eventual removal.
Reactions on social media were mixed, with some fans supporting Doncic's intervention to defend the official and others viewing his involvement as unnecessary. Some suggested the fan's action was unintentional or an attempt to be helpful.
Doncic, who has a reputation for arguing calls with officials, received praise from some quarters for defending the referee, while others felt his reaction escalated the situation. The Slovenian player concluded the game with 40 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.
