The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced a significant overhaul of its selection process, reducing the number of voters and eliminating the senior player category. The changes come after the exclusion of former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick from the 2026 class, a decision described by some as a "snub."

Hall of Fame president Jim Porter stated that the organization "continually reviews its bylaws to ensure the selection process reflects the highest standards of integrity and the magnitude of election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame." He added that "There is no more important task at the Hall of Fame than the election of each new class."

The number of selectors will be cut from 50 to 28, with three of those being non-voting alternates. The traditional system where each NFL team had a representative on the committee will end. Some selectors being removed may be asked to participate in other Hall of Fame committees.

The process for presenting candidates will also change. Instead of selectors making detailed cases for nominees, a non-selector will introduce each candidate by announcing their name and resume. The reduced voting group will then immediately enter discussions. The Hall aims to avoid "unintended biases" and limit the influence of oratory skills on the selection outcome.

The Hall has also consolidated the selection categories into three: Player, Coach, and Contributor. The prior split of players into modern-era and senior categories is being eliminated. All players not currently in the Hall will be considered in a single player category. This change is intended to prevent emotional biases that might arise when considering players in their final years of modern-era eligibility before they could be moved to the senior category.

Subcommittees will be formed for coaches and contributors, each comprising 11 voting selectors and three alternates. These subcommittees will put forward one coach and one contributor for consideration by the full voting body. A contributor is defined as someone who has made significant contributions to the game outside of playing or coaching, including roles such as broadcasters, owners, executives, or commissioners.

Annually, the Hall expects to consider 13 players, one coach, and one contributor. The Hall of Fame anticipates inducting between three and seven individuals each year, with five or six being the most probable class size.

The reduced group of selectors will convene in person once a year, with the next meeting scheduled for the first week of February 2027.
