Leicestershire's relegation to Division Two of the County Championship has been finalized after the club's appeal against a substantial points deduction was rejected. The club had challenged the removal of 19 points awarded for the substandard pitch prepared for their August victory over Glamorgan.

Initially, Leicestershire had 27 points deducted, but eight were reinstated after the Cricket Regulator raised concerns about the disciplinary panel's initial decision. The club was also fined £5,000. This outcome confirms their return to Division Two after finishing second from the bottom in the standings, 17 points behind Essex.

"We are hugely disappointed with this outcome, but we will not let it define us," said Leicestershire chief executive Emma White. "Come pre-season, we will be ready to battle it out in Division Two, and to fight our way back."

The victory against Glamorgan on August 23 was one of Leicestershire's few wins that season and had offered a boost to their survival hopes. However, the condition of the playing surface drew significant scrutiny, prompting match officials to request an inspection by the England and Wales Cricket Board's pitch and grounds adviser, Andy Mackay.

Leicestershire's head groundsman, Callum Lewin, cited circumstances beyond his control, including a severe heatwave and an "unscheduled Bollywood filming event" on the pitch shortly before the match, as contributing factors to its poor state. Mackay's assessment found the pitch fell short of first-class standards, with the highest innings score being 257, and Lewin's explanations were not accepted in the adjudication.
