Los Angeles Lakers rookie Cameron Carr finds himself in awe of his superstar teammate Luka Dončić, particularly Dončić's historic offensive start to the 2026-27 NBA season. Carr, who made his NBA debut recently, has been closely observing Dončić's unique approach to the game.
"I’ve said it since college, he moves in slow motion, but it just works," Carr stated ahead of the Lakers' game against the Sacramento Kings. "I don’t know how it works, but it works. He plays at his own pace; he doesn’t get sped up. It’s impossible to take the ball from him — I don’t know how it works."
Dončić is currently leading the league in scoring, averaging 38.3 points per game, along with 8.1 assists, eight rebounds, and 1.9 steals. His scoring rate of 1.072 points per minute entering Wednesday's matchup against the Kings is on pace to set an all-time league record, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain's 1961-62 mark of 1.038 points per minute.
"Just to be able to be in his presence and see how his mind works every day and what he’s thinking about … it sharpens his game but also sharpens people around him," Carr added. "I don’t think he realizes how much impact he has on dudes like me. I’m here every day, just soaking things up. He’s the best scorer in the NBA. That’s big-time."
Carr, who averaged 18.9 points per game during his lone season at Baylor, has a unique perspective on Dončić's scoring ability, especially his prowess in the early stages of games. Dončić has been averaging a league-high 15 points in the first quarter and 22.9 points in the first half.
"When you look up in the first quarter and he has 20, 22 points, you’re like, ‘Wow, how did he get there so fast?’ That’s the only question you can really ask," Carr said. "Like, he’s about to make something ridiculous. Oh, he banked in a [3-pointer against the Raptors]. I ask him every game like, ‘Did you mean to do that?’ He like, ‘Don’t even ask — you know I did.'"
Carr's observations highlight the significant impact Dončić continues to have on his teammates and the league as he approaches potentially historic scoring milestones.
