Tenerife announced that the condition of their striker, Jesus de Miguel, has "worsened neurologically" in an early morning update, four days after he suffered a severe head injury during a match against Andorra.
The Spanish second division club shared the latest news of De Miguel's condition at 4 a.m. local time on Tuesday and stated that more information would be provided in the coming hours.
De Miguel, 30, was admitted to intensive care following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono. The incident occurred deep into stoppage time of their league match, which was abandoned with the score tied at 2-2. An initial club statement confirmed De Miguel was "stable despite the severity of his condition."
According to Spanish media outlet Marca, De Miguel is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported to the hospital and required resuscitation in the ambulance. He is reportedly stable and breathing on his own but remains unconscious.
The game was in its seventh minute of stoppage time when De Miguel appeared poised to break away on a counter-attack. As he received a long ball near the halfway line, he was struck in the chest by Owono's knee as the goalkeeper attempted to clear the ball. De Miguel initially writhed on the ground before becoming motionless. Medical staff attended to him for over five minutes, with teammates visibly distressed. Owono was shown a red card for the challenge, and the referee subsequently abandoned the fixture.
Following treatment on the pitch, De Miguel was taken to the hospital on a stretcher. Andorra also released a statement expressing their support for De Miguel and his family. LaLiga president Javier Tebas offered his well wishes via social media, stating he was following the news with "great attention."
