Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel has died after sustaining serious injuries during a Spanish second division match against Andorra on Monday.
The 30-year-old suffered head and chest injuries following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, who was sent off for the challenge.
Spanish media reported that De Miguel experienced cardiac arrest in an ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics en route to the hospital. An initial statement from Tenerife indicated De Miguel was in a stable condition, but the club later announced his medical condition had worsened neurologically.
The incident occurred seven minutes into stoppage time with the score tied 2-2. Owono had come out to clear a long ball when his knee appeared to collide with De Miguel.
De Miguel lay motionless on the pitch while medical staff attended to him before he was taken to the hospital. Players from both teams were visibly distressed, with several of De Miguel's teammates in tears. The referee abandoned the match shortly after the incident.
Andorra expressed their support for De Miguel, sending best wishes for his recovery to the player, his family, and Tenerife.
