Hampshire Cricket has reversed its decision to sign former New Zealand cricketer Scott Kuggeleijn following significant backlash from fans and staff. The club confirmed on Wednesday that Kuggeleijn will not represent Hampshire, just a day after he was reportedly signed as an all-rounder for the final four matches of the County Championship season.

Kuggeleijn, 34, was listed among the 15 players for the County Championship fixture against Warwickshire, a move that preceded an official announcement of him as an overseas signing. This inclusion prompted immediate criticism from supporters, with some calling the decision "a disgrace" and "shameful." The controversy stems from Kuggeleijn's past, as he was charged in 2015 with sexual violation by rape and indecent assault involving two complainants. Although he was acquitted after a first trial resulted in a hung jury, his subsequent selections for national and domestic teams have drawn protests.

Hampshire issued a statement a day after the initial player list was posted. "Having reflected and listened to feedback from our staff and supporters, Hampshire Cricket can confirm that Scott Kuggeleijn will not represent the club," the statement read. The announcement was made five minutes before the start of their game against Warwickshire, after the teams had already been revealed.

The club emphasized its value for its fanbase. "We value the passion of our fanbase and thank everyone who took the time to share their views," the statement continued. "Our focus now turns to supporting the team through the final four County Championship fixtures of the season. We encourage everyone to unite behind the team as we enter a crucial stage of the campaign."

Kuggeleijn has a long history in New Zealand cricket, having played for Northern Districts for 12 years. Hampshire, currently at the bottom of Division One in the County Championship, still had four fixtures remaining in the season, including a match against Leicestershire, who they trail by 16 points.
