German national team players have reportedly requested greater clarity from head coach Julian Nagelsmann regarding his strategies and team selections as they approach the knockout stages of the World Cup. Concerns have surfaced among the squad, who feel they have been "left in the dark" by Nagelsmann, according to a report in German newspaper BILD.
Nagelsmann's team topped their group but suffered a 2-1 defeat against Ecuador in their final group match. Sources within the team suggest that the head coach's communication with players outside of training sessions is minimal. The squad was reportedly surprised when Nagelsmann indicated in a press conference that few changes would be made for the match against Ecuador, a decision that seemingly contrasted with the eventual starting lineup which saw Jamal Musiala replace Maximilian Beier in the attacking third.
Following the loss to Ecuador, Nagelsmann reportedly emphasized his desire to give "everyone an opportunity" within the squad. Currently, four players from Germany's 26-man roster have not yet seen playing time in the tournament. Two of these are backup goalkeepers Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nubel. Additionally, Nick Woltemade of Newcastle and Assan Ouedraogo, who was a late addition to the squad due to an injury to Lennart Karl, have also remained on the bench.
The lack of involvement for Woltemade has reportedly caused concern, as he was a consistent starter for Germany during the qualifying matches, scoring four goals in six appearances and playing in 11 consecutive games prior to his recent absence from the lineup. Kai Havertz and Deniz Undav have since established themselves ahead of Woltemade in Germany's attacking options. Havertz has started in all three group matches, scoring twice in the opening game, while Undav has proven effective as a substitute, also scoring against Curacao and twice in a comeback victory against Ivory Coast.
Germany is set to face Paraguay in the last-32 round. Paraguay advanced as a third-placed team after securing a win against Turkey and a draw with Australia, having lost their opening match 4-1 to the United States. A victory for Germany would set up a potential round of 16 tie against France, who are scheduled to play Sweden.
