San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle is showing significant progress in his recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon, potentially positioning him for a Week 1 return against the Los Angeles Rams. Kittle suffered the injury seven months ago during the NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport observed Kittle's workout and described it as "eye-popping," noting that the player appeared to be moving at "full speed." While the typical recovery timeline for an Achilles injury is around nine months, Rapoport indicated there is a "chance" Kittle could be ready for the season opener. Kittle has been actively documenting his recovery progress through workout videos during the offseason.
The injury occurred in the second quarter of the Wild Card game after Kittle made his only reception. He sustained the injury as he braced for a tackle.
Although the 49ers would welcome Kittle's presence for the start of the season, the team's primary focus remains on having him available for crucial late-season games when playoff positioning is on the line. Rapoport highlighted that Kittle having a realistic opportunity to play in Week 1 is an "incredible" development.
