Fred Warner, linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, has set a new franchise record for career tackles, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Patrick Willis. Warner achieved this milestone during the 49ers' 27-7 season-opening victory against the Los Angeles Rams.

He entered the game needing four tackles to break Willis's record and finished with 11, bringing his career total to 958. The performance marks a significant return for Warner, who was sidelined by a fractured ankle in Week 6 of the previous season. He appeared in only six games last season, a first in his career where he previously averaged 128 tackles per season from 2018 to 2024.

"I don’t think Fred has ever had a bad day in his life. He’s one of the most impressive people I have been around," said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. "He just passed Pat Willis today for the most tackles in the history of our franchise and has a lot more ahead of him, too. Fred’s the man."

San Francisco's defense limited the Rams' offense, led by quarterback Matthew Stafford, to 280 yards and one touchdown. The unit also forced two turnovers and made a crucial goal-line stand on fourth down. Warner was central to the defensive effort, making his presence felt throughout the game.

In addition to his tackling record, Warner also recorded his 18th career forced fumble against the Rams, another franchise record previously held by Willis, which he surpassed last season before his injury. Warner and fellow linebacker Dre Greenlaw were instrumental in forcing a fumble from Rams tight end Tyler Higbee in the third quarter, which helped seal the victory.

Warner was drafted by the 49ers in the third round out of BYU in 2018. Despite his injury, and nearing his 30th birthday, Warner demonstrated a high level of play, resembling his performance as one of the league's top middle linebackers. He indicated he was close to returning for the playoffs last season, and his play in the season opener suggests he has fully recovered.
