England players, including Jude Bellingham, urged goalkeeper Jason Steele to join them on stage to collect their bronze medals at the World Cup following a victory over France. Steele, 35, has never been capped by the senior England team but has been an integral part of the squad's environment throughout the tournament.
The Brighton & Hove Albion shot-stopper was considered fourth choice for the Three Lions and was not part of the official squad selected for the competition held in North America. However, Steele trained with the team, supported them during matches, and played a significant behind-the-scenes role.
After watching his teammates receive their bronze medals for defeating France 6-4, Steele was called over to the podium. Bellingham and other players encouraged him to join them, and Steele crossed the pitch to accept a medal, which was presented to him by Jordan Henderson.
Steele has represented England at youth levels but has yet to make a senior appearance. He received his first senior call-up in March and was brought to North America specifically as a training goalkeeper. In the previous club season, he made five appearances for Brighton, all in cup competitions. Despite this, he has over 350 professional appearances to his name and has been a more regular starter in prior seasons.
England manager Tuchel had acknowledged Steele's contribution when naming his squad in May. "We chose three goalkeepers plus Jason Steele," Tuchel stated. "I want to take the opportunity to thank Jason for being brilliant and thank Brighton for being so co-operative and supportive."
Steele is expected to serve as the second-choice goalkeeper for Brighton in the upcoming season, backing up Bart Verbruggen. His current contract with the club extends until the end of the next campaign.
