Newcastle winger Anthony Elanga was stretchered off during a pre-season friendly against Valencia on Saturday evening after a forceful challenge from Valencia captain Jose Luis Gaya. The incident occurred just before halftime at the Mestalla Stadium.
Gaya received a straight red card for a high lunge that connected with Elanga's shin, prompting a mass brawl between players and staff from both teams. Elanga, who had been a standout performer for Newcastle up to that point, was left in visible distress on the field.
After receiving extensive treatment to his right leg, Elanga was taken off the pitch on a stretcher. Newcastle trailed Valencia 1-0 at the interval.
However, the 24-year-old winger was able to walk to the dressing room during halftime, and initial reports indicate that he has avoided serious injury. The match concluded with Newcastle trailing.
