UFC President Dana White voiced strong disappointment with Ian Machado Garry's performance and demeanor following his unanimous decision loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 330. White suggested that Garry, despite his talent and impressive takedown defense, lacked the necessary aggression in the championship rounds, particularly in the fifth, which he felt cost him a potential upset victory.
"I think that Ian is a talented guy. If he had even an ounce of killer instinct in that fifth round, he had been beating him to the body. Islam’s whole, I think, right side was beat up. His face was beat up. You don’t come out and hug and shake hands. That s–t drives me f–king crazy when there’s so much at stake," White stated during the post-fight press conference. He added that he wished he could replay the final round, believing Garry missed an opportunity to go for a decisive finish, such as a flying knee.
Makhachev himself commented on Garry's conduct, noting the unusual sportsmanship displayed between rounds. "Honestly, I don’t understand. This is a fight. This is not something we have to hug each other every round. We’re going to war. We’re going to break the face, to break the eye. I respect all my opponents. But [maybe he’s young]. He respects too much," Makhachev said, echoing White's sentiment that Garry showed too much respect.
The fight saw Makhachev successfully defend his welterweight title, with judges scoring the bout 49-46 on two scorecards and 48-47 on the third. This victory marked Makhachev's 17th consecutive win in the UFC, surpassing Anderson Silva's previous record for the longest winning streak in the organization's history.
Makhachev, now 29-1, suffered his only professional loss in October 2015. Garry, 28, fell to a record of 17-2, with two losses in his last four outings. The bout took place on August 15, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
