CM Punk made a dramatic return to WWE's "Monday Night Raw" in Chicago, defeating Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The surprising turn of events occurred after Gunther neutralized Cody Rhodes earlier in the show, setting the stage for Punk's unexpected challenge.
Following his loss, Zayn was visibly distraught backstage, delivering an expletive-laden promo expressing his anger and disbelief at Punk's swift victory. "How is it that after 24 years after crawling and inching for every little inch to get the WWE championship, after I finally get it, nine days after I get it, that piece of s--- can walk back in here after not being here for months, for months, and waltz right in and get it? Get a chance? That mother----er. He has no business. No business," Zayn stated, breaking down in tears as he processed the end of his short championship reign.
This development comes shortly after Zayn had secured the championship. Initially, Cody Rhodes was slated to face Zayn. However, Gunther intervened and attacked Rhodes, leading to Zayn believing he might have a night off before being informed of a replacement opponent. That replacement turned out to be Punk.
Rhodes had previously earned a triple-threat match opportunity at Night of Champions by defeating both Zayn and Gunther, but a subsequent beatdown by Gunther last week on "Friday Night SmackDown" complicated his path back to the No. 1 contender spot after he had defeated Jey Uso. With SummerSlam less than a month away, Punk appears poised to enter the event as the Undisputed WWE Champion.
Zayn also spoke about his character work in a previous interview with Fox News Digital, describing it as a "choose your own adventure" type of experience.
