Steve Belichick, son of former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, is on indefinite medical leave from his role as defensive coordinator for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels football team.

Bill Belichick announced his son's absence from training camp on Thursday, citing a medical situation without providing further details. When asked about Steve's potential return for the Tar Heels' season opener against TCU on August 29, Belichick stated that his son would be back "as soon as possible."

This development occurs just weeks after Michael Lombardi, the Tar Heels' general manager, was placed on paid administrative leave. Lombardi joined the UNC staff in Chapel Hill in December 2024, following Bill Belichick's transition to college football. His leave stems from an internal human resources complaint filed by a former staffer.
