Manchester United goalkeeping prospect Darlington Osuchukwu, 16, has joined Spanish club Athletic Bilbao.
Osuchukwu, who moved to Manchester from the Spanish side Gazte Berriak near Pamplona at the age of 13, was considered a promising talent. He had received call-ups for both England's U16s and Spain's youth teams over the past year. Last season, he was a frequent presence on the bench for the U18 squad and was part of the team that won the U16 Premier Shield. He had also been invited to train with Manchester United's first-team squad.
Barcelona and Reims had also expressed interest in the young goalkeeper. However, due to his family's desire to return to the Basque region, Bilbao emerged as the preferred destination.
Osuchukwu posted an emotional message on Instagram detailing his decision. "After four unforgettable years at this incredible club, I have made the incredibly difficult decision to move on and embrace a new challenge," he wrote. "This was not a decision my family and I took lightly. While I was grateful to be given the opportunity to continue my journey here, we believe the time is right to begin a new chapter."
He expressed gratitude to everyone at Manchester United, including coaches, kitmen, and his teammates, whom he described as "brothers." "Every one of you has played a part in shaping not only the footballer I am today, but also the person I have become," Osuchukwu stated. "The lessons, values, friendships, and memories I have gained here will stay with me for the rest of my life."
The young goalkeeper also thanked the club for the opportunity to represent Manchester United, calling it "one of the greatest privileges of my young career." He concluded by saying, "Although I am moving on, Manchester United will always hold a special place in my heart. I leave with nothing but gratitude, respect, and memories that I will cherish forever."
