A group of international soccer fans, visiting the United States for the World Cup, received an immersive, two-day introduction to Texas culture, including off-roading adventures and a pilgrimage to the popular Buc-ee's gas station.
Drew Haas, a South Central Texas resident, hosted two couples from Poland and France at his 30-acre ranch. He aimed to showcase his version of America, which he described as "my Texas." The itinerary featured activities such as four-wheeling through mud, learning to two-step, and experiencing the expansive Buc-ee's convenience store, known for its numerous gas pumps and wide array of snacks and merchandise.
One of the visitors, David Mazur from Poland, noted that the experience felt like stepping into a movie, reminiscent of the John Wayne westerns his father watched. His partner, Martina Bijinska, initially expressed skepticism but was won over by the activities. "I was a bit skeptical at first, but then I just feel like, yes, I can do this all day," she told CBS Evening News. They also participated in cowboy dancing lessons, learning the steps before dancing Texas-style.
Haas took the visitors off-road in his pickup truck, a highlight that involved navigating muddy terrain on his property. The tourists appeared to thoroughly enjoy the rugged experience.
Haas described the experience of sharing his home state with strangers as emotional and fulfilling, stating that his "soul's been lit on fire" by their enthusiasm. He conveyed that the visitors seemed to embrace the lifestyle, expressing a desire to "soak it in" and enjoy every moment. Haas believes this kind of interaction captures the essence of the America he wishes to inhabit, one where connections are formed through shared experiences like off-roading and visiting local landmarks.
The tour provided a stark contrast to the typical tourist experience, offering a hands-on glimpse into rural Texas life and local culture that resonated deeply with the international guests.
