National Geographic has unveiled its annual "Best of the World" travel list, identifying 25 destinations globally, with five standout locations within the United States. These American spots were chosen for their scenic beauty, culinary offerings, and cultural attractions.

Madison, Wisconsin, earned a spot for its lakeside activities and local cuisine. Situated between Lakes Mendota and Monona, the state capital provides extensive trails and green spaces, complemented by a vibrant college-town atmosphere. The city is noted for its numerous parks and a robust network of over 200 miles of hiking and biking trails. The Dane County Farmers Market, described as the nation's largest producer-only market, is a Saturday highlight during the summer on Capitol Square. National Geographic also recognized restaurants such as Fairchild and Ahan for their culinary contributions.

California's Pacific Coast Highway, particularly the Big Sur region, is highlighted following the reopening of key sections after extensive closures due to mudslides. The area offers opportunities to explore lesser-known artistic communities, including Laguna Beach, which is set to celebrate its centennial in 2027 with a new pedestrian promenade featuring shops, galleries, and dining. Lompoc is noted for its mural-lined streets and the nearby Wine Ghetto, while the tiny town of Harmony offers artisanal ice cream and local crafts. The northern stretch of the highway leads to artistic enclaves like Mendocino County and Fort Bragg.

The Southern Ozarks, spanning Missouri and Arkansas, are recognized for their natural landscapes, including bluffs, valleys, and ridgelines. The region is a hub for outdoor pursuits, with destinations like Bentonville, Arkansas, home to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Bella Vista, Arkansas, is promoted as a mountain biking destination with the OZ Trails Bike Park. Dogwood Canyon Nature Park in Missouri offers expansive scenery with opportunities to see wildlife such as elk and bison.

Baltimore, Maryland, is cited for its historical significance as the birthplace of the American railroad, with the National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation slated for an upgrade. The city's historic Lexington Market, established in 1782, features a variety of merchants. Baltimore's Inner Harbor offers attractions like the National Aquarium and the USS Constellation, alongside dining options featuring local seafood. The Baltimore Blueway provides kayaking trails, and Fort McHenry, the site that inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner," is also recommended.

Catalina Island, California, another Californian inclusion, is a ferry-accessible island known for its rugged terrain and resident bison herds. The island is home to unique endemic plant and animal species, including the island fox, which can be seen along the Trans-Catalina Trail. The Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden provides scenic ocean views and showcases rare island flora.
