A squash-shaped wooden bowl mounted on four short legs found in a 19th-century houseboat was identified by internet users as an early form of the bidet after the discovery prompted widespread speculation online.
The photograph, posted to Reddit’s r/whatisthisthing, showed a low, oval wooden basin with decorative woodworking and what appeared to be a fabric or leather lining. The poster noted the item was too short to serve as a standing work station or footstool and that the houseboat already contained a sink and toilet, leaving its purpose unclear.
Commenters on the forum proposed several uses, including a baptismal basin and a baby bath. One respondent wrote, "The moment I looked at the size, shape, and decorative wood work the first thing I thought of was baptisms," while another said, "I assumed it was a bathroom tub for a baby."
Several users, however, pointed to a different and better-documented function: a portable bidet or "cleanliness seat" first used by the French aristocracy. Those identifications noted that early bidets often featured a wooden frame with a ceramic bowl that fit inside, and that the side indentations of the wooden form allowed the user to rest their thighs. "Bidet. They had a ceramic bowl that fitted inside, the indentations in the side are made for thighs," one commenter wrote. "Looks like that the thighs fit on the sides and a ceramic bowl sat inside pretty much an early bidet setup," another added.
Murielle Schlup, a freelance art historian and cultural scientist, said historical attitudes toward cleanliness help explain the object. In earlier centuries, water was sometimes believed to transmit disease, which limited full-body bathing in many social circles. As a result, private devices designed for localized washing, described in some accounts as "cleanliness seats," became more common among the wealthy.
Antique domestic fixtures of this type are now rare. A 19th-century pine bidet similar in form to the object shown on Reddit was listed for sale on Etsy for £3,546.65 (about $4,162), illustrating the market value collectors place on such unusual household artifacts.
The identification highlights how everyday items from past centuries often had specialized uses that can look puzzling to modern eyes. The Reddit exchange combined crowd-sourced knowledge and historical context to clarify a functional piece of domestic history recovered from a houseboat, underscoring both changing hygiene practices and the variety of personal plumbing solutions used before modern bathrooms became widespread.
