A printing error at Wimbledon's Centenary Brasserie has led to a temporary half-price sale on certain large glasses of white wine, much to the delight of spectators. The All England Club is honoring the mistaken prices while new menus are printed.
The error affected two varieties of 250ml white wine, listing them at significantly lower prices than intended. For instance, a 250ml glass of Piquepoul/Terret Blanc, Les Caves Richemer, France, was priced at £6.95 instead of its usual £15.95. A similar discount applied to a 250ml glass of Thirsty Birds Chardonnay, England.
One diner reported being initially charged the correct, higher price but was later adjusted after pointing out the discrepancy on the menu. A staff member confirmed that the error had been ongoing throughout the day and that new menus were expected the following day. "The prices should be around £14 for a big glass," one staff member noted, adding that explaining the discrepancy to customers was time-consuming.
Michelle Dite, head of Operations at Wimbledon, acknowledged that minor issues can arise due to the scale of operations at the Championships, which involve hundreds of staff across multiple venues. "We pride ourselves on detail, but you know we've got hundreds of chefs, hundreds of restaurants, we've got multiple outlets, so there's always some little things that [are missed]," she told the Daily Mail.
The Centenary Brasserie is one of the more sought-after dining locations at Wimbledon, offering views of the courts. The accidental discount provided a brief respite for attendees facing the event's typically high food and beverage costs. This year, a glass of Pimm's costs £13.45, and strawberries and cream are priced at £2.85. A pint of draught Stella Artois is £8.95.
