The Season 4 premiere of HBO's "The Gilded Age" delivered a significant development for the character of Marian Brook, played by Louisa Jacobson. In an episode titled "Ring the Bells," Marian shares an intimate night with her former flame, Larry Russell, portrayed by Harry Richardson. This encounter, which occurs after they are stranded together due to a storm, leads to immediate and profound emotional turmoil for Marian.
Jacobson explained to Decider that the scene, set against the backdrop of Oscar van Rhijn and Enid Winterton's wedding festivities, was designed to showcase Marian experiencing "release and happiness and joy." The actress described the dancing scene with Larry as "amazing to shoot," noting that it allowed Marian a moment to "let go." However, this fleeting happiness quickly gives way to shame and panic the following morning.
"When the reality of the 19th century Victorian purity laws basically come crashing down on her the next morning and the realization that she could be turned out on the streets, destitute, no longer suitable for marriage, life prospects, all gone," Jacobson stated, conveying the character's distress. She elaborated that Marian's panic stems from understanding that she alone will face severe social and personal consequences for the transgression, while Larry will not bear the same burden.
Jacobson acknowledged the difficulty for a contemporary audience to grasp Marian's intense reaction. "It’s difficult for a modern audience to understand that, but it was difficult for me as an actor, certainly, to unlearn all the things I know about sex," she said. The actress emphasized that the stark contrast between the night's passion and the morning's despair was crucial for depicting the character's struggle within the rigid societal norms of the era.
Fellow cast members Denée Benton and Ben Ahlers offered support, noting Jacobson's powerful portrayal of Marian's emotional shift. The episode, which is now streaming on HBO Max, sets the stage for how this pivotal moment will influence Marian's future relationships and standing within New York society.
