William Orbit, a Grammy-winning British music producer renowned for his collaborations with iconic artists such as Madonna, Blur, All Saints, and U2, has died at the age of 69. Orbit's family and friends announced his passing on Friday, stating he died at home on July 23. A cause of death was not provided.
Orbit, born William Wainwright in North London, significantly contributed to the resurgence of Madonna's career with her 1998 album "Ray of Light." This album, which masterfully fused electronic dance music and ambient techno with pop sensibilities, earned three Grammy Awards and is widely considered one of Madonna's defining works.
His innovative production style also left a mark on Blur's experimental 1999 album "13" and All Saints' chart-topping "Saints & Sinners." Orbit's credits extend to U2, for whom he produced the 2002 single "Electrical Storm."
In addition to his work with other artists, Orbit released his own critically acclaimed electronic-classical crossover album, "Pieces in a Modern Style," in 1995.
Orbit's family and friends expressed that he "will be greatly missed by us and by so many whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness."
