Walter Koenig, the actor best known for his role as Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series, died on October 25 at the age of 90. His cause of death has been revealed as cardiopulmonary arrest, according to a death certificate reviewed by TMZ. Chronic diastolic congestive heart failure was noted as an underlying cause, with acute renal failure also contributing.
Koenig died at his home in North Hollywood, California, and was cremated on October 30. His final resting place is the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the same location where his son, actor Andrew Koenig, was interred more than 16 years prior following his death in 2010.
Koenig portrayed Chekov in more than 36 episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series and reprised the role in seven Star Trek feature films. He also voiced the character in the series Star Trek: Picard in 2023. Beyond Star Trek, Koenig had a notable role as Alfred Bester on Babylon 5 and continued to work in voice acting, attend conventions, and take on select screen projects throughout his later years.
His career also extended to screenwriting, with credits including Land of the Lost and Family. He was born in Chicago to Russian Jewish immigrants and his character on Star Trek was introduced in the second season, partly to appeal to younger audiences with his hairstyle resembling Davy Jones of The Monkees.
Despite his extensive career and contributions to science fiction, Koenig's time on Star Trek was not without challenges. He detailed on-set tensions, particularly with co-star William Shatner, which he described as a result of a rigid Hollywood 'caste system' where supporting actors felt less valued. While he termed their relationship as never fully healing, Koenig also made efforts to move past their history, including addressing it on Shatner's talk show and in his 2020 memoir, stating he did not take the slights personally.
