The Epping Ongar Railway, a heritage line in Essex, England, has been transformed into a cinematic location for the upcoming sequel "Practical Magic 2." The railway's authentic stations and vintage carriages, preserved since the 1990s, proved an ideal setting for a scene featuring Hollywood stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
Producers selected North Weald station and one of its 1960s British Rail Mark 1 coaches for filming last summer. Robert Bentley, a representative for the railway, stated that the location was a "perfect fit" for the production's needs, offering both the desired countryside backdrop and the specific vintage train carriage.
While not reaching six figures, the payment for the location use was described as "quite a high figure." Bentley was even cast in a minor role as a train guard with a single line of dialogue.
This is not the first time the Epping Ongar Railway has lent its charm to the film and television industry. Its authentic appearance has also featured in productions such as the TV shows "Man vs. Baby" and "Death in Paradise." The railway maintains its stations and carriages, offering visitors a glimpse into a bygone era of rail travel.
The specific Mark 1 coach used for the "Practical Magic 2" scene is representative of the classic rolling stock that once operated across Britain's railway network. The Epping Ongar Railway aims to preserve and operate heritage steam and diesel trains, making it a popular destination for enthusiasts and, increasingly, for filmmakers seeking authentic period settings. The railway has been working to restore and maintain its fleet and infrastructure, ensuring its historical significance is maintained for future generations.
