Viewers of ITV's The 1% Club criticised a recent final-round question after both contestants failed to answer what many at home said was an obvious riddle.
The question presented to the last players read: “Bonnie is planning a heist. In a coded message she instructs her accomplice about which type of escape vehicle to bring. What vehicle will Bonnie be using?” The coded message given on screen was, “Meet me at the gazebo atop the hill after 11am.” Both finalists answered incorrectly and host Lee Mack revealed the solution to the studio, but dozens of viewers took to social media to say they had the answer almost immediately.
Commenters on Facebook argued the clue pointed clearly to “boat.” One wrote, “Boat? Surely if that's right it can't be a 1% question,” while another said, “That’s incredibly easy for a 1% question.” Several viewers described spotting the solution in seconds: “Got this in about two seconds, far too easy,” said one, and “Boat just stood out to me,” said another. A number of posts offered playful alternative readings — for example, a viewer suggested “llama” and another joked that the word “eleVAN” could hide a different vehicle — but the dominant reaction was surprise that a final-round puzzle labelled a 1% question would be solved so quickly by home audiences.
The 1% Club, hosted by comedian Lee Mack, tests 100 players with logic-based questions tied to percentages of the population who would answer correctly, from 90% down to the show’s signature 1% riddle. Each player represents a £1,000 stake that is added to the prize pot when they are eliminated, leaving survivors to play for as much as £100,000 or a share of the winnings. Since its launch the show has won two National Television Awards.
Producers and viewers have regularly debated the difficulty calibration of the questions as rounds progress; the programme’s format relies on the progressively harder percentage thresholds to pare down contestants. In this episode, the mismatch between the perceived simplicity of the final clue and the 1% designation prompted renewed discussion about how the show sets those thresholds and how clues are constructed for broadcast audiences.
Separately, a former contestant who appeared on the programme in October 2023 offered viewers a glimpse of Lee Mack away from the camera. Billie told The Express that Mack was focused and professional on set, with limited casual interaction because he was “wired for sound” and following directions from producers. “You could tell he was on it trying to just do his best, but constantly had somebody in his ear going to the next thing,” she said.
The episode and the social-media reaction underline the high scrutiny quiz programmes face as audiences compare on-air difficulty with at-home solvability. The 1% Club is available to stream on ITVX.
