Australian actor Jacob Elordi, whose profile has surged due to his role in "Euphoria" and his relationship with Kendall Jenner, is not the right fit to play James Bond, according to Debbie McWilliams, the casting director for the franchise from 1981 to 2021.

McWilliams, who was instrumental in casting Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as the iconic spy, stated that Bond must remain an enigma, a quality she believes Elordi's current celebrity status undermines. "I don't want to see him as Bond because we know so much about him. We want to know as little about them personally as possible... that's what spies are," McWilliams told The Independent. She emphasized that audiences should not be privy to the character's personal life, such as where he shops or who his family is.

Bond's Credibility

Furthermore, McWilliams highlighted the importance of believability in the character's "licensed to kill" profession. "He's licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don't, then you've lost the audience," she explained. She noted that actors she previously cast, like Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan, had relatively low public profiles before taking on the role, which aided audience acceptance. Daniel Craig, while having an independent film career, was not yet a household name.

Rising Speculation

Recent speculation has intensified around Elordi potentially succeeding Daniel Craig, particularly after a cinematic Chanel advertisement featuring the actor in an espionage-themed scenario. Fans online interpreted the ad as a potential "soft launch" for his Bond casting. Elordi's popularity has also been boosted by his recent role in "Wuthering Heights" and his perceived favorable odds among bookmakers for the coveted role.

McWilliams advocates for casting an actor who emerges "completely out of the blue" to maintain the mystique essential to the James Bond character. She believes that actors with lower public profiles allow audiences to more readily suspend disbelief and accept them as secret agents.
