The Ugandan dance troupe known as the Ghetto Kids has described their experience performing at the FIFA World Cup final halftime show as a "very, very, very, very, very good" and life-changing event. The group, composed of young members from Kampala, appeared on stage with global artists Burna Boy and Shakira during the mid-game performance.
Despite some criticism regarding the inclusion of a large-scale performance during the football event, the children's participation reached millions of viewers worldwide. The young dancers spoke to the BBC's Newsday program about their journey from humble beginnings in Uganda to performing on a global stage, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and balancing their passion with education.
"Never give up... pray to God. Listen to your parents, education is first, that's all," advised Sierra, one of the group's members. For 10-year-old Sierra and 11-year-old Josephine, the World Cup appearance was a significant milestone. The final match saw Spain defeat Argentina at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Josephine expressed her excitement at seeing prominent players like Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal, recalling, "I was so happy to see Messi and people watching us. I felt so excited and I was smiling, and a little bit nervous."
Sierra also commented on the interaction with the featured artist Shakira, stating, "Shakira, she's very kind." The Ghetto Kids' manager and the young performers highlighted that their success has required dedication while they continue their schooling. Rehearsals and performances are managed alongside their academic responsibilities. The group's journey from local performances in Uganda to the World Cup stage underscores their commitment to both dance and education.
