Turner Prize Winner Keith Tyson to Transform Hometown Garage into Art Center
Artist Keith Tyson plans to establish a space for exhibitions, education, and community engagement in Ulverston.
Turner Prize-winning artist Keith Tyson has purchased a former Mercedes-Benz garage in Ulverston, his hometown, with plans to convert it into a center for art and learning. The privately funded initiative aims to provide young people with opportunities to engage with art, inspired by Tyson's own experiences growing up where local galleries were scarce.
"There were no galleries for miles around, so I thought this could be a chance to give young people in the community an opportunity to see and learn about art in a way that I never had," Tyson stated. The project is in its initial stages, but Tyson expressed excitement about the building's potential to become an arts destination for the northern region.
The envisioned center is intended to feature exhibition spaces, a reference library, and programs for schools and the broader community. Tyson, who won the Turner Prize in 2002, is known for his multidisciplinary work that blends art, science, and technology.
His former art teacher, Adrian Newnham, welcomed the plans, noting that Ulverston already possesses a vibrant cultural identity. "Ulverston is a festival town with a cultural buzz. Hopefully, his venture will raise the artistic status of the town even more," Newnham said. He recalled Tyson as a highly talented student and mentioned keeping some of his early artwork.
